FGS was founded in 1976 and represents the members of hundreds of genealogical societies. FGS links the genealogical community by helping genealogical societies strengthen and grow. To do this, FGS publishes FORUM magazine, filled with articles pertaining to society management and genealogical news. FGS also publishes an extensive series of Society Strategy Papers, covering topics about effectively operating a genealogical society.
FGS also links the genealogical community through its annual conference. The 2011 Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference, "Pathways to the Heartland," was held 7-10 September 2011 in Springfield, Illinois. The local host was the Illinois State Genealogical Society.

The Massachusetts Genealogical Council's purposes are: to act as advocates in monitoring legislative and administrative activities of governmental agencies which affect genealogists; to sponsor and present legislation and programs designed to expand the resources and accessibility of services; to develop and promote the growth, education and exchange of ideas among persons and organizations interested in the pursuit of genealogy; and to provide other activities to advance genealogy.

MSOG, Inc. is a charter member of NERGC. There are currently more than 20 societies that comprise NERGC, covering the New England states, including MA, CT, RI, and Vermont. NERGC hosts a biennial conference. April 17-21, 2013 will be the date for the next conference. It will be held in Manchester, NH.

National Genealogical Society has as its mission to serve and grow the genealogical community by providing education and training, fostering increased quality and standards, and promoting access to and preservation of genealogical records. The NGS 2011 Family History Conference was held 11-14 May 2011 in Charleston, South Carolina.
As an organizational member, MSOG, Inc., stays up to date with genealogical developments and can post events on the NGS website and in NGS Magazine.
