Program Descriptions
GETTING INTO GENEALOGY (An Introduction) - two hour program
This presentation will provide sufficient information on how to get started in genealogy and family history.
The program is designed to establish partnerships with local libraries and, if available, showcase the genealogy
holdings in that library. Libraries are urged to contact any MSOG Chapter President or MSOG Board member to set up a
program.

BEGINNING GENEALOGY - five hour program
An introduction to genealogy that covers guidelines for recording information, filling out the most
common genealogy forms, home sources, interviewing relatives, organizing everything, and choosing
genealogy database software. An afternoon session covers common primary sources (those created at
or near the time of an event by a person who had reasonably close knowledge of an event) such as vital
records (birth, marriage, death), tax and voting records, funeral/cemetery records, and census.

INTERMEDIATE GENEALOGY - five hour program
Delve into proper internet research and useful websites for locating your ancestors. Also
covered in this class are secondary sources, Secondary sources are records created a
significant amount of time after an event occurred or by a person who was not present at
the event. While both types of sources are important in genealogy research, primary
evidence usually carries more weight than secondary evidence, and it is important to know
which type of evidence you are viewing! Everyone is asked to bring a bag lunch for an
informal lunchtime question and answer session.
